Two introductory years (Brugklas)
The transition from primary school to secondary education can be an exciting and sometimes challenging step. Some students thrive better in a smaller, more personal environment rather than a large school community. Schakel College offers flexible and personalized education in a structured and safe learning environment for mavo, havo, and vwo. Bij het Schakel College zijn er twee brugklasjaren.
Highest attainable level
When a student joins our first year (brugklas), we look beyond the primary school recommendation. We see this advice as a starting point, while the student’s ambitions and potential guide our approach.
During the two-year introductory period, we work with two instructional groups per year (mavo–havo and havo–vwo). Students largely follow the same programme and are regularly taught together in one group. The havo–vwo group is offered more in-depth material. Within the groups, students often work independently or in small teams, encouraging independence, confidence, and collaboration.
The learning materials we use are applied flexibly, allowing us to respond to differences in ability between students. At the end of the second year, a final recommendation is given, and students move on to Year 3 mavo, havo, or vwo.
Approach
We consider the development of key competencies—such as social, presentation, and research skills—to be essential. There is a strong focus on both independent and collaborative learning, using practical assignments and a variety of learning strategies.
The integration of different subject areas and lessons supports this approach. By organizing the curriculum into broader learning domains, we work with a smaller team of teachers. This strengthens the connection between students and teachers and allows for more meaningful and personalized attention.
Profile Choice
In the second half of Year 3, students choose a profile—an important decision that shapes their future. Our mentors and guidance counselor support and guide this process through career orientation lessons. Together with parents, we ensure that every student makes a well-informed profile choice.
